General Information

Researchers and physicians at the Zalmen A. Arlin Cancer Institute work tirelessly to develop groundbreaking preventive and therapeutic strategies that have and will save so many live in US and throughout the world. The Institute brings together some of the finest researchers, physicians, surgeons, scientists and technicians with today's latest state-of-the-art technologies, with a shared vision of "delivering patient-centered, quality-oriented, research-driven care". It has been active in developing both clinical and research activities, with the mission to bridge all the modalities involved in treating patients with cancer.

Cancer is a disease with devastating physical, emotional and socioeconomic impact. It is a disease that not only effects the patient, but also their family. It is the second leading cause of death in the United States today, exceeded only by cardiovascular disease. The approach to controlling cancer involves utilizing both clinical and basic research, together with prevention, education and outreach activities.

Westchester Medical Center has a long tradition of providing cutting edge cancer care and pioneering innovative therapeutic approaches to cancer management. The work of clinical investigators at Westchester Medical Center has resulted in important new antineoplastic drugs such as mitoxantrone, novel chemotherapeutic regimens for leukemia remission induction and management of selected solid tumors, anticancer vaccines, the tandem blood cell transplant strategy, the refinement of stem cell cryopreservation techniques, and the automated intraoperative treatment planning program to improve brachytherapy for prostate cancer.

New treatment modalities and programs resulting from the research are made available to our patients through the protocols designed by our physicians and sponsored by national cancer research groups, such as the National Cancer Institute, Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, Children's Cancer Study Group and other cooperative groups, as well as Westchester Medical Center's academic affiliate New York Medical College

Our goals and Objectives:

As we go, we look forward to your input, feedback and advice to help us further develop Arlin Cancer Institute initiatives, programs and services designed to build the knowledge base and serve patients, families and the public-at-large.
