Winning the Fight

Groundbreaking research, state-of-the-art treatment, internationally renowned doctors and the highest level in compassionate care make the Zalmen A. Arlin Cancer Institute at Westchester County Medical Center the top choice for people facing cancer from throughout the region and the world.

The Cancer Institute's team strives aggressively to involve patients in their treatment and recovery. Patients and their families cared for at the Institute tell us that the team carries out its commitment by making them partners in care and assists them in living with and fighting their cancer.

The Cancer Institute is home to one of the most active bone marrow transplant programs in the world, and one of the few programs in New York State approved by the National Marrow Donor program as an unrelated bone marrow transplant and collection center.

The Cancer Institute collaborates with key national study groups and ranking universities in dozens of cutting edge research projects, as part of the Medical Center's affiliation with New York Medical College, for such cancers as leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and prostate, brain, breast, lung and an array of gynecologic cancers. Patients are able to participate and benefit from scientific advances in oncologic medicine and technology years before they are available to the general public.

The Cancer Institute continues to break ground in therapeutic anticancer approaches, including matched unrelated marrow and cord blood transplantation, stereotactic radio-surgery, high dose rate brachytherapy, hyperthermia and cryosurgical procedures. The implementation of a gene screening and therapy program and expansion of molecular biology services are among the many innovative therapies on the horizon at Westchester County Medical Center.

Cancer Resource Center

March 26, 1999 marked the official launch of the Zalmen A. Arlin Cancer Institute's Cancer Resource Center and website. The 1,300-square-foot Cancer Resource Center was designed, constructed and outfitted with over 350 current and classic texts, hundreds of pamphlets, videos and audiotapes and a website featuring 40 carefully researched hotlinks to the latest scientific findings associated with cancer prevention, treatment and supportive care options. A corps of specially trained volunteers are on hand to navigate visitors through the informational sources available or to perform external searches on more complex topics. In addition to print and electronic sources of information, the Resource Center also offers a full menu of support programs focusing on the healing connection between mind, body and spirit.
