What is Conformal Radiation?
Conformal radiation is a method of external beam radiation, designed to deliver high dose of radiation conformed to the shape of the tumor while avoiding the healthy tissue.
3-D CRT is achieved by a unique computer-driven device called a multileaf collimator (MLC). This device directs radiation beams precisely, conforming to the shape of the tumor, allowing the maximum amount of radiation required to control the tumor without exposing normal tissue to high doses of radiation.
How is Conformal therapy achieved? Conformal therapy involves several complex steps.Immobilization : of the patient is achieved with a custom designed device, to prevent patient movement during the CT scan and daily treatmentsLocalization / Simulation: Multiple Images of the involved area are obtained with a special CT scan - SimulatorTreatment planning & Dosimetry : After the 3-D reconstruction of the tumor and adjacent normal tissues, a 3-D treatment plan is designed with appropriate number of beams and the precise path of their entry and convergence towards the tumor (bypassing healthy tissues in the path) creating radiation distribution that envelopes the tumor.Treatment plan verification: With the patient positioned in treatment position, appropriate |

Conformal Radiation Therapy is a new technique that allows the radiation oncologist to "conform" or shape the radiation treatments to the tumor. The technique allows the doctor to treat the tumor from different angles. It is designed to reduce the radiation dose to normal tissues as much as possible. Radiations produced by linear accelerators or cobalt units are the main treatment tools for radiation oncologists. There are other forms of radiation available in a few areas of the country. Neutrons and particles such as protons require extensive technology and equipment. |
Neutron beam treatment can be used to treat advanced prostate, and salivary glands with excellent results. Proton beam therapy can selectively be used for uncommon tumors, around the eye and spinal tumor. It also can be used to treat cancers like advanced prostate cancer.
